How To Build Outdoor Furniture | DIY Outdoor Furniture

When we were looking for a new house over 5 years ago, one of my wife's wants/requirements was a screened in porch. After we moved in, she naturally wanted to buy some furniture so she could start enjoying it. We initially entertained wicker style furniture but then decided, let's build some custom that will fit and look the way we want. So I headed on over to Pinterest to start looking and I stumbled across a DIY furniture tutorial by Anna White that we like and decided to model ours after.

The 2 sofas are built exactly like alike using 2x4 & 2x6 for the main frame with a 1x2 trim; 1x6 & 1x3 for the seating and backrest. The table was built using 2x4 for the frame and 1x4 & 1x3 for the table top. The 2 rolling carts are framed with 2x4 & 2x6 with 1x4s for the top. There is a vertical wood 2x4 in the center of the carts in case someone sat on them, although I don't believe the wheels are designed to hold that much weight. All 5 of these items were assembled using pocket hole screws, putty and sanded over. All of the sofa cushions are by the Threshold brand from Target.

The bistro table frame was built with 2x4 & 1x3 and 1x4 for the table top. The bistro chairs were built with 2x2, 1x3 and 2x3 boards. The table has 2 inserts that can be removed to reveal a cooler which is just a simple planter box from Lowes. Most of the pictures were taken right after build but the 2 of the bistro table were taken a couple years later so they look worn.

All pieces are painted with Cabot Slate Gray and coated with Minwax Helsman Spar Urethane. The entire set could use a repainting and clear coating. I wish when I put the original clear coat on it, I would have used Polycrylic instead of the polyurethane as this eventually causing yellowing/amber tint of the color.

This is a pretty good relaxing space where you can enjoy the weather and outdoors without constant irritation from bugs.
